Precautions on the selection and use of switching power adapters

1. Precautions on selecting switching power adapters

1) Select the appropriate input voltage specification;

2) Select the appropriate power. In order to increase the life of the power supply, a model with a 30% higher output power rating can be selected.

3) Consider the load characteristics. If the load is a motor, bulb or capacitive load, the current is large when the power is turned on, and a suitable power supply should be selected to avoid overload. If the load is a motor, the voltage backflow should be considered when the power is turned off.

4) In addition, the working environment temperature of the power supply and the presence or absence of additional auxiliary cooling equipment must be considered. The power supply needs to be derated when the ambient temperature is too high. The derating curve of ambient temperature on output power.

5) Select various functions according to the application requirements:

Protection function: overvoltage protection (OVP), overtemperature protection (OTP), overload protection (OLP), etc.

Application function: signal function (normal power supply, power supply failure), remote control function, telemetry function, parallel function, etc.
Special functions: Power Factor Correction (PFC), Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)

6) Select the required safety regulations and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) certification.

2. Precautions for using switching power adapters

1) Before using the power supply, first determine whether the input and output voltage specifications are consistent with the nominal value of the power supply used;

2) Before powering on, check whether the input and output leads are connected correctly to avoid damage to the user’s equipment;

3) Check whether the installation is firm, whether the installation screws are in contact with the power board components, and measure the insulation resistance between the shell and the input and output to avoid electric shock;

4) To ensure the safety of use and reduce interference, please ensure that the ground terminal is reliably grounded;

5) Power supplies with multiple outputs are generally divided into main and auxiliary outputs. The main output characteristics are better than the auxiliary output. Generally, the output with a large output current is the main output. In order to ensure indicators such as output load adjustment rate and output dynamics, it is generally required that each channel carry at least 10% load. If the auxiliary circuit is used instead of the main circuit, an appropriate dummy load must be added to the main circuit. Please refer to the specification of the corresponding model for details;

6) Please note: Frequent switching of the power supply will affect its lifespan;

7) The working environment and load level will also affect its lifespan.
